The Community Development department is headed up by the City Planner. The City Planner
of the City of Watertown is responsible for performing professional work by coordinating planning and
development activities, monitoring and enforcing the Watertown Municipal code and land use documents and carrying out the strategies
as set forth in the Watertown Comprehensive Plan.

Typical Duties Performed
- Assists with enforcement of land use regulations including comprehensive plan, subdivision ordinance, and Watertown Municipal Code.
- Prepares Planning Commission agendas, minutes, staff reports, and recommendations.
- Reviews building permit applications and performs site inspections. Prepares State of Minnesota Quarterly Surchase Reports.
- Serves as zoning administrator (see the zoning map). Works with involved
parties to resolve complaints and problems.
- Prepares and updates land use documents including comprehensive plan, subdivision ordinance, and Watertown Municipal Code.
- Serves as staff to Parks and Recreation Commission. Prepares agendas, minutes, staff reports, and recommendations.
- Coordinates special projects including annual parks inspections, community clean-up, and Tree City / Arbor Day activities.
- Reviews development proposals and makes recommendations to Planning Commission, EDA, and City Council.
- Drafts city ordinances upon requests of Planning Commission and City Council with assistance from City Administrator, City Engineer, and City Attorney.
- Prepares grant applications and serves as grant administrator.
